Missouri Teratogen Information Service

The Missouri Teratogen Information Service (MOTIS) is a free statewide service available to pregnant women, fathers, obstetricians, family practitioners, and other healthcare providers of women and children in Missouri. If you are not from Missouri, please click here for links to teratogen services in other areas.

MOTIS provides information about the effects of exposures to medications or other drugs, chemicals, or infections which may be harmful to an unborn child. If you are pregnant, or thinking about becoming pregnant, and have questions about an exposure, please click here for information on how to obtain a risk assessment.

MOTIS operates through the Children's Hospital at the University of Missouri-Columbia. Utilizing a variety of resources, the staff collects, analyzes, and distributes information on potential teratogens to pregnant women and their healthcare providers. The goal of this program is to eliminate preventable birth defects caused by teratogen exposure, through both individual and community education. MOTIS is coordinated by a teratogen information specialist and directed by a board certified geneticist, both specially trained to interpret the clinical information and analyze current literature regarding potential teratogens.
